Ok. i took a few days to think over the Peeping Tom show i attended the other night at the Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa. Now, I seriously doubt there is a Mike Patton fan out there more die-hard than i am. Not crazy-stupid obsessed, but die-hard in the sense that i have followed his career/music since the early Bungle days, enjoying it, living it my own way. From "Elegy" to "Pranzo Oltranzista" to "Mit Gas" and all the others. I got it all. Anyway, i went to see Peeping Tom open up for Gnarls Barkley. I have to say, i almost felt sorry for PT because the crowd was so fucking LAME (for lack of better term) i wanted to fucking riot! i mean, i sat next to some 54-year-old dude in a Hawaiian shirt and his fat-ass wife and their twelve-year-old son who talked and complained about this and that through the whole PT show, waiting to hear Gnarl's hit song "crazy" or whatever it is called. In fact 90 percent of the crowd was there just to hear that one song. I was outside the arena taking a piss when, as i came out of the bathroom, "Crazy" came on and suddenly hundreds of people who were also out there smoking, chatting, hanging out, all rushed back inside the arena to hear that song. AND, even better, when the song was over, half the stadium emptied out. These are not even Gnarls Barkley fans, let alone Patton fans. Seriously, if the crowd wasn't made up of families, it was teenage girls or frat guys with whale-bone margaritas who had never been to a rock show before. It sucked. As for the PT music. I have to say, that perhaps the crowd was so aloof during the set because PT was BORING man! I have the album, and thought it was a cool concept and fun to listen to, expecting the live show to send me over the hump of apprehension i had. But it only made it worse. Every fucking beat was the same it seemed. You can only bob your head up and down to the same fucking beat for so long. I was really disappointed. But that's just me. I could watch PT and get off on certain things, it had certain "moments". But damn if an average listener could. No way. It was very difficult to feel the band, to let loose on the songs. And thats my comment. Viva la Mike Patton!
